Two critical after scaffolding collapses in Sandton

16 November 2016

Two construction workers were critically injured when scaffolding they were on collapsed in Sandton on Tuesday, paramedics said.

They were taken to a nearby private hospital, ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said.

The cause of the collapse was not yet known.

A Gautrain security guard who was outside the construction site, on the corner of Rivonia and West streets, at the time of the accident, said he did not suspect anything had happened until he heard sirens.

“I was walking in front of the construction site and all of a sudden I heard loud sirens coming toward me,” the man said.

“I didn’t hear a noise. I heard people say that they heard a noise, but I thought it was part of the construction.”

A woman who worked at a bakery across the road said she heard a noise coming from inside the construction area.

“I just saw a large group of men coming out fast. I heard a noise, but it sounded like the usual construction. The next thing I heard from bystanders that people were trapped inside. I can’t say we were able to see or hear anything because it’s quite noisy in this area,” she said.
