Ethiopia: awarding road projects to local contractors paying off

Awarding road infrastructure construction to local contractors is boosting their technical, institutional and financial capability.The experience they garner has enabled them to compete in several construction bids.

The 73-km Buhait-Dil yibza road project is being carried out by Satcon Construction Company, and the 65-km Debrk-Buhait route by Ecore Local Construction Company. Consultancy and supervision work is carried out by local company Icon Consulting Engineering.

Ethiopian Road Authority Communication Directorate Director Samson Wondimu said that the projects totally owned by local contractors, and consulted and supervised by local companies.

The government has focusses on local contractor capacity building to upgrade their competitiveness at a global level. The Debark-Buhait-Dil yibza project is an example.

Buhait-Dilyibza Road Project Manager Eng. Abraham Teklay said that constructing road at such very mountainous and difficult terrain is challenging, but that the tremendous experience from the project has built the company’s confidence to compete in other construction bids.
