Uganda: SMEC to manage development of 183MW hydropower project

The Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited (UEGCL) has awarded SMEC a contract to provide project management and construction

supervision services on the 183MW Isimba hydropower project located on the Nile River, 90km northeast of Kampala.

SMEC will help UEGCL oversee the performance of various contractors, including the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor and owner’s engineer, the Water Power magazine reported.

The plant will extend over 2,865 hectares and will include a concrete gravity dam, a clay-core rockfill dam, spillway, powerhouse, switching stations and auxiliary power transmission works (including the 42km 132 kV Isimba-Bujagali transmission line).

Once completed, the plant will generate 1,040GWh of electricity per annum, and is expected to increase the country’s capacity by 23%.
