Dr Guy Scott, Zambia’s vice president, says the recently unveiled phase of Link Zambia 8000 road project is driving huge demand for earth-moving equipment. Scott’s message was read when unveiling a plaque at the U.S$14-m Barloworld Equipment facility in Kitwe.
Scott said Link Zambia 8000 was creating new opportunities for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) leading their own contracts in Zambia and working with JVs with top world construction companies.
The Link Zambia 8000 road project will help rehabilitate and transform the country’s road system. The first phase will cover ±2,290 km, alone expected to cost US$1.5b.
The second phase of Link Zambia 8000 will cover 3,049 km at an expected cost of US$2.165b. The third phase, expected to cost US$1.73b, will cover upgrading 2,862 km of the road network.
Some of the projects under the development include upgrading the Great East road and help open a trade route through the Nacala corridor leading to the Indian Ocean port of Beira.
Scott also indicated that the U.S$14-m Barloworld Kitwe Facility will support government’s socio-economic growth targets in the mining sector. Thus, the Link Zambia 8000 road project would boost Zambia’s GDP.
