South Africa’s Department of Health will build 43 state-of-the-art hospitals across the country in the next five years. In addition, the department will also construct 216 clinics and renovate 816 old hospitals.
Minister of Health, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, says the hospitals would be constructed to accomplish the National Health Insurance (NHI) mission. These hospitals would also be built in rural areas so that the public can access good quality health services.
Motsoaledi also noted that the new facilities will be equipped with advanced technology so that doctors will not be reluctant to go to rural areas. One of the components installed at the newly opened US $0.09bn Dr Harry Surtie Hospital in Upington is the Lodox Machine-Xray scanner, which was invented in South Africa.
This facility, which serves half of the Northern Cape also helped create over 200 types of jobs for residents of the region.
The MEC of Public Works, David Rooi, noted that women contractors participated in the construction of the hospital.
