The IFP in KwaZulu-Natal Legislature called on the construction sector to throw its weight behind government developmental programmes that will fast-track development.
“Partnership in public works is crucial for both sustainable development and job creation, which will help to reduce poverty. The construction industry is widely seen as one of the driving forces to fight poverty because it creates jobs and has the ability to develop skills that empower people to start their own businesses,” said IFP Spokesperson on Public Works, Hassan Motala, MPL.
“The IFP is of the view that there must be a strong work relationship between emerging and established constructors, the financial sector and government to make sure that these stakeholders are contributing towards development as well as in the Expanded Public Works Programme,” continued Motala.
“We call on the MEC of Public Works, Ravi Pillay, to encourage learners to study engineering by offering bursaries to gain expertise and enhance the pace of development in the country.
“The department must go out to rural areas and host career exhibitions to attract young people to become engineers. The department needs to visit universities, and FET Colleges around the province to encourage engineering because both government and the private sector depend on their help,”
