AfDB loans Burundi US$29.49m for road improvement

01 October 2014

The African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved a grant of US$29.49 m to Burundi for Phase 1 of the Nyakararo-Mwaro-Gitega Road Improvement and Asphalting Project.

Infrastructure improvement works pertains to a 30-kilometre-long Nyakararo-Mwaro-Kibumbu road, an undertaking that will see the country benefit from regional trade.

Farmers in the region are set to benefit since it will be easier to market their produce and procure inputs, once the project is complete. People in the region will have improved access to socio-economic infrastructure and a better opportunity to create new initiatives.

Apart from the AfDB’s support through the Nyakararo-Mwaro-Gitega Road Improvement and Asphalting Project, Burundi could also benefit from IMF’s expansion of projects from 2013’s 4.5% to 4.7%.
