The African Development Bank (AfDB) will be the lead financier of the US$612-million new airport terminal at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), with construction slated to start January next year says Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) MD Lucy Mbugua.
The Greenfield terminal will span 178,000 m2, with a capacity to accommodate 20 million passengers annually. An additional 5.5-km runway will be constructed to handle larger flights thus increasing the number of aircraft taking off and landing at the airport simultaneously.
With passenger growth of 12% per annum, the number of passengers at the airport is projected to rise to 17.1 million in 2020 and 35.3 million in 2030.
The loan agreement with AfDB is scheduled for signing in December and construction for January 2015. The Governmnet of Kenya will fund 15% of construction costs. The new terminal is expected to be ready by 2018.
The new airport terminal will be a public-private partnership with AfDB working with other financiers in a consortium.
As the largest airport in East and Central Africa, JKIA links Kenya to the rest of the world and contributes over 10% of Kenya’s GDP. The government was also undertaking a US$650-million expansion to double its capacity along with a planned rail link.
Government is also expanding the Outer Ring Road to a dual carriageway to facilitate better access to JKIA.
