Algeria to spend over US$5b on construction of hospitals

03 March 2015

Algeria government has set aside over US$5 billion to construct ten new hospitals and rehabilitate others that are in bad condition.

The Algerian minister for health, population and hospital reform, Abdelmalek Boudiaf, said construction work had already started on five hospitals, and tenders for the other five will be announced before end of 2015.

Construction will be undertaken by foreign companies because local companies lack experience in implementing projects to international standards.

The companies include United Kingdom International Hospital Group and a consortium between Rizzani de Eccher, an Italian construction company, and Ospedale San Raffaele hospital. They are expected to deliver the projects by 2019.

According to World Health Organization (WHO) statistics, Algeria’s total expenditure on health per capita is US$439 and 5.3% of its GDP is spent on health.
