Botswana’s president Lt Gen. Dr Seretse Khama Ian Khama has emphasised the country’s commitment in improving and investing in energy generation, particularly in renewable energy.
After he toured the Midal Cables International Company in Mozambique recently, President Khama said the government is striving to find new ways of improving energy generation and distribution in the country.
He said government will invest more in solar generating plants to supplement current coal generating plants.
He added that research had identified abundant gas resources in the country, so government aimed to transform some coal-operated energy generating sites into gas generating sites.
Government also intended to invest in more solar energy generation. He was hopeful that Botswana could be self-sufficient in terms of energy in future.
He added that the country was putting up hundreds of kilometres of transmission lines which would be use to improve the supply of energy to many households.
Government is hoping to import transmission lines from Mozambique, hence his visit to Midal Cables.
Hamid Al-Zayani, chairman of Midal board, said his factory had been manufacturing cables in Mozambique since December 2014 was exporting its products to Namibia, South Africa, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Tanzania and Nigeria.
