Cesa urges Zuma to accelerate NDP

17 June 2014

Consulting Engineers South Africa (Cesa) is hopeful that President Jacob Zuma will use the State of the Nation Address (SoNA) on Tuesday to emphasise the importance of accelerated implementation of the National Development Plan 2030 (NDP) to growing the country’s economy and addressing unemployment, poverty and inequality.

Government, through the NDP, had identified infrastructure development as key to the socioeconomic development of the country, noted Cesa adding that it felt the NDP’s objectives would never be realised unless consulting engineers were at the forefront of this development.

“It is time to bring the 18 Strategic Integrated Projects on stream,” said Cesa CEO Lefadi Makibinyane. Cesa recommended that a monitoring agency be formed below the secretariat level of the Presidential Infrastructure Coordinating Commission (PICC and have dual reporting responsibility to government and business through business representative bodies.
Cesa commended President Zuma for initiating the Presidential/Business Bilateral for Inclusive Growth Task Team on Infrastructure and hoped that this would too be highlighted during the SoNA.
