A construction business which has achieved substantial international sales, and an academic who has helped hundreds of women to start their own businesses, are among those in Wales who have won Queen’s Awards this year.
Dawnus International received the Award for International Trade, in recognition of its success in delivering major civil engineering schemes in Africa since 2010.
Since beginning work in Africa it has provided employment and training opportunities to more than 1,500 local people.
“It is an honour for Dawnus to be recognised by the Queen’s Awards,” said managing director Andy Peters.
“The award reflects the hard work our team has put in to successfully win and deliver projects overseas, and the difference we are making to communities in West Africa.”
Dawnus currently employs 900 people in the UK and more than 1,200 in Africa. The company says it invests in training and developing all its employees, both at home and abroad, and it has provided its African workforce with skills training to European standards in a number of trade disciplines.
Concrete Canvas has won a Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Innovation. The Pontypridd-based company has received the award in recognition of its ground-breaking material, Concrete Canvas, which allows many concrete installations to be accomplished up to 10 times more quickly and with less environmental impact than using traditional methods of concrete construction.

Winners of The Queen’s Awards can use The Queen’s Award Emblem in advertising, marketing and on packaging for five years.
