Damon Kalvari joins the PPC Kremetart Cycle Race team

14 May 2014

The PPC Kremetart Cycling Race team is very happy to announce that Damon Kalvari has come onboard as the race ambassador for 2014. Turning 25 this year, Kalvari’s appointment is one way of creating a more memorable PPC Kremetart Cycling Race.

Kalvari, an ex-road runner due to lower back injuries, got into cycling purely by chance in 2011 when he was invited to participate in a mountain bike race in Kwa-Zulu Natal. He mentioned this to an acquaintance who is a keen cyclist and was invited to join his weekly cycling group. “I’ve found that since I’ve started cycling, I hardly ever get lower back pain. Cycling basically works those core muscles that protect and stabilise your spine. It’s fantastic, because I’m able to cross-train with running as well,” he said.

Rated as Best Road Race and one of the Top Three Road races amongst cyclists in the country, the PPC Kremetart Cycle Race will take place on 7 June 2014 in Louis Trichardt, Limpopo province. The race attracts cyclists from all over the country. Over 10 000 visitors, young and old, experienced and inexperienced, gather there for a fun-filled weekend every year.

“I am really excited to be taking part in the PPC Kremetart Cycle Race this year, even though I still have lots of training ahead of me. I am trying to do at least three spinning classes a week and running 8km’s four times a week. Sadly, because of my busy work schedule, my Parkview group and I can only do our 60km’s ride on the road on Sundays. I have stopped eating chocolate, and I have almost cut out fizzy drinks completely. I’m getting there,” said Kalvari.

Follow Kalvari’s progress on Twitter @DamonKalvari and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/damon.kalvari?fref=ts. He can also be heard on CliffCentral.com on his own show mid mornings during the week, where he will be sharing his progress for the race. He will also be keeping fans updated through his WeChat channel.

The first race of the day is geared towards the whole family, with activities for cyclists of different ages and fitness levels. The main attraction is a one day, four stage 175km race and for the more adventurous, there is a Mountain Bike Cross Country Olympic Race with scenic routes of the Soutspansberg Mountain. If that is not quite for you, there is also a 70km Road race, 10km Fun Ride and a kiddies’ road race.

“The race is a fantastic opportunity for the Louis Trichardt community to work together and present a top-class event. The PPC Kremetart Cycle Race has attracted close to 10 000 visitors and created over R20 million in local business development for the Louis Trichardt community in previous years. We are optimistic that all entrepreneurs within the town and the surrounding areas will benefit from the race. Our support will also ensure that the race grows in bounds to have more people visiting and thus growing tourism in the province,” said Sibongile Mooko, General Manager: Marketing Services.

“We are delighted to have Damon participating in the 2014 PPC Kremetart Cycle Race. I can’t wait to share the great bushveld vibe and hospitality! We hope that he will be back for more,” said Renda Alexander, PPC Kremetart Cycle Race organiser.
