To stimulate use of nonmotorised transport (NMT) and reduce the province’s overall carbon emissions, the Gauteng Roads and Transport Department is currently developing a NMT master plan to integrate all Gauteng’s municipal NMT network plans and commit sustainable funding for developing associated infrastructure.
Several projects centred on incorporating cycling and pedestrian infrastructure (dedicated pedestrian and bicycle lanes) in the design and maintenance of impending and ongoing road construction projects.
Gauteng transport MEC Ismail Vadi said the NMT master plan would ensure that various spheres of government collaborated to achieve the objectives of Gauteng’s 25-year integrated transport master plan (ITMP25).
Vadi also announced on Monday that the GTC aimed to donate 3 000 bicycles to scholars as well as create 5 km of cycle lanes in Vosloorus, south of Johannesburg, and 10 km of cycle lanes in Kaalfontein, in Midrand.
In Alexandra township, sidewalks were being improved and widened, and a dedicated “cycle way” built, linking Longmeadow/Linbro Park and the Marlboro Gautrain station.
