Ghana’s Tamale airport upgrade to begin

01 August 2014

The upgrade of the Tamale airport is expected to commence by end of July 2014. Deputy Minister for Transport Joyce Bawah Mogtari said that the US$100m Tamale airport project is being undertaken because of land availability.

However, the government will still go ahead with the plans of upgrading the Kumasi Airport to international standards as the Ghana Airports Company is at present upgrading the existing runway at the Kumasi airport. It is also speculated that plans are underway to construct a new terminal at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) to take pressure off the other terminals.

Asked why the government has decided to build an international airport in Tamale regardless of the considerable traffic at the Kumasi airport, government attributed the delay in upgrading Kumasi airport to lack of space and encroachment. In the meantime, the government has announced the plan to set up an Aviation fuel depot in Tamale.
