The final phase of construction work on 5,000 affordable housing units in Kpong, Ghana has begun. The affordable housing programme began in 2005 aimed at providing accommodation for Ghana’s low- and middle-income earners.
The project was delayed by monetary challenges. The units are part of the government’s plan to reduce the 1.7-million housing shortage by 2016.
Speaking at the launch of the 2014 Building Construction and Property Exhibition in Accra, the deputy Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing, Johnny Osei Kofi, said the government partnership with the private investors will rapidly complete the project. The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), Tema Development Corporation and other developers are partners with the government in the execution of the project.
The project will be carried out in two phases, with the first phase expected to deliver the 168 housing units already complete and waiting for commissioning by the President. The second phase was progressing slowly.
