Incomati River in Mozambique to get new dam

06 November 2014

President Armando Guebuza laid the first stone for construction of a major new dam on the Incomati River in Maputo Province last Friday.

Water from the new dam will be used for electricity generation (the dam will generate 15 MW), domestic use, cultural practices, irrigation of 19,000 hectares of agricultural land, tourism and fisheries.

Construction of the new dam will regulate the Incomati River, preventing floods occurring after torrential rainfall or during droughts, and provide 2 million people in the greater Maputo Metropolitan Area with clean drinking water.

When work begins on the dam and even upon completion, up to 18,000 direct jobs will be created.
