Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has confirmed that the second container terminal at the Mombasa Port is 85% complete ahead of the March, 2016 completion date.
KPA’s head of corporate affairs Bernard Osero stated that the Mombasa port is set to add a capacity of 450,000 twenty feet equivalent units (Teus), bringing the total capacity to 1.55m Teus.
“The terminal which comprises three berths will expand container handling capacity of the port of Mombasa to match future trends, stay competitive in cargo handling and facilitate economic development in the Northern corridor,” the KPA Managing Director Gichiri Ndua said.
The dredging works of the mega project is being carried out by Van Oord Dredging and Marine contractors while construction of the new cargo berth is being undertaken by China Roads and Bridge Corporation.
The project is funded by a loan from the Japanese Government.
