A new bridge is set to be constructed alongside the current Kamuzu Barrage in Liwonde.
Malawi Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development, Dr. Allan Chiyembekeza, recently launched public works worth US$50m – including improvement of the barrage, which opened in 1965.
Norwegian firm Norplan will undertake supervision and consultation work on the project, with civil construction was awarded to Portuguese company, Conduril Engenharia.
In addition, Italy’s CMC Di Ravenna will supply 14 new barrage gates to replace the old gates and will control weed formation on the Shire River. This will regulate the Shire River’s flow, checking flooding downstream and enable stable generation of electricity by ensuring that the water level on Lake Malawi is sufficient.
