Masterclasses to tackle construction industry matters

07 September 2015

Two Masterclasses will be held at the upcoming Master Builders South Africa (MBSA) Congress, taking place

from the 15th to the 17th of September at the Johannesburg Expo Centre. These will enable attendees to gain insight into issues affecting the South African construction industry – particularly the Best Practice Contractor Recognition Scheme being developed by the Construction Industry Development Board (cidb) and dispute resolution within the modern built environment sector.

Dr Rodney Milford will be unpacking the Best Practice Contractor Recognition Scheme. Milford is the Programme Manager; Construction Industry Performance at the cidb and is the previous Director of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research’s (CSIR) Knowledge Services and Building and Construction Technology (Boutek) divisions.

The Scheme will promote the development and performance improvement of contractors by putting forward acceptable standards necessary for running a contracting enterprise. It will also recognise a contractor’s track record and experience as well as enable clients to acknowledge and reward contractors for quality and superior performance on projects.

Those who opt to attend this Masterclass will learn about the benefits of the Scheme to both contractors and clients. Milford will also clarify the Scheme’s elements of Contractor Performance Reports, Contractor Competence Standards, Accredited Construction Management Systems and Accredited Supply Chain Development System. In addition, he will delve into who will be affected by each of these and whether they will be mandatory or voluntary.

Dr John Fletcher will be speaking on the topic of dispute resolution. He is the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Products Group Director at the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) who is responsible for RICS’ global Dispute Resolution Services (DRS).  This session will provide practical, real-world insight into the role of mediation in the modern built environment sector.

Both Masterclasses are Continuing Professional Development (CPD) accredited.

According to MBSA Operations Director Pierre Fourie, “We encourage all Congress attendees to take advantage of this opportunity to learn more about these crucial topics.”
