Mauritania signs seven solar power deals

10 February 2015

The Mauritanian government has signed a deal with United Arab Emirates Company Masdar for the production of more solar energy from seven photovoltaic projects.

The solar power projects will generate a total capacity of 12 MW and will be completed in the first quarter of 2016, with each plant expected to produce 30% of the electricity demand of its host town.

According to Masdar, the solar power project will provide clean and reliable energy to most towns in the country and save the country 6 million litres of diesel and 16,134 tonnes of CO2 emissions per annum.

Once complete, the solar power project will provide sustainable energy solutions, job opportunities and economic growth in Mauritania. It will also reduce use of diesel generators to generate electricity for local consumption.

Masdar will work closely with local suppliers, contractors and Mauritania Electricity Company (Somelec) during the planning and delivery of this, its second power plant project in the country.

The first was the installation of a large power plant in the capital city Nouakchott two years ago, which helps meet 10% of the country’s electricity needs.
