The road project to upgrade Mozambique’s Beira-Zimbabwe road has started with construction of a second bridge over River Pungue.
The bridge will link the districts of Dondo and Nhamatanda in the central of Mozambican province of Sofala.
The bridge, awarded to Chinese contractor Anhui Foreign Economic Construction Corporation (AFECC), will be 250 m long and have two lanes.
The contractor will also rehabilitate and upgrade a 288-km road between the port of Beira and border town Machipanda and neighboring Zimbabwe, said Provincial Directorate of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources spokesman, José Luis.
Jose Luis said the National Road Number Six (EN6) road project is expected to take three years and cost US$410 million, provided by the government of Mozambique and Export-Import Bank (Ex-Im) bank of China.
The road construction project will open landlocked countries (Zimbabwe, Malawi, Zambia, Botswana and DRC) that use the port of Beira for foreign trade.
