Murray & Roberts wins road upgrade tender

18 February 2015

The Trans African Concessions (Trac) has awarded a 22-month contract to upgrade the N4 Toll road connecting Mozambique to South Africa to Murray & Roberts Infrastructure (MRI).

Work on the N4 Toll road upgrade includes construction of a new double-lane eastbound carriageway, which will help increase the capacity of the 18-km section of road.

Also included would be construction of an overpass bridge at the Klein Olifants river, minor renovation on existing bridges and the construction of six large on-site culverts and drainage works.

Project manager for MRI Derek Brink said necessary environmental management plans had been put in place to facilitate the road upgrade project. In addition, MRI had reconfigured the section of road into a three-lane carriageway.

The Trans African Concessions (Trac) will be in possession of the road till its 30-year concession expires in 2017. The transfer will then go to Mozambique and South Africa who will have a joint ownership. Completion of the road upgrade is expected to be in 2016.
