New system for civil construction contracts in Tanzania

13 July 2016

The Minister for Works, Transport and Communication, Prof Makame Mbarawa has called on contractors and engineers in the country to familiarise themselves with the new system for civil (roads and bridge) construction contracts.

The New system, currently being employed by developed countries, will enable contractors to build roads through long-term contracts where the contractor will be paid according to the outcome.

Prof Mbarawa, opening a seminar in Arusha for road stakeholders from 19 countries and 30 institutions across the world, said the new criteria will force contractors to build high quality roads, reduce maintenance requirements and save the government millions.

He commended the Road Fund Board for distributing funds for road construction across the country well and on time, calling on Council heads to ensure the funds are used for those projects.

“However, anyone who will misuse the road funds will be taken to task. We want the money to go directly to those projects so that the nation can reach its objective of becoming a middle income country by 2025 by having better road infrastructure in place,” he explained.
