Governor Abdullah Umar Ganuje has released the sum of N8billion to 500 indigenous contractors as part of outstanding debt owed by the state government. This was revealed by chairman of the Nigeria Chamber of Indigenous Contractors, Kano State Chapter, Dr. Auduwa Maitangaran, who briefed newsmen yesterday.
Maitangaran said though the governor had been gradually paying the contractors to reduce the debt since he came to power, the latest figure is the largest sum they had received so far, adding that the payment was released at the end of last month. He commended Ganduje for the gesture, saying it has improved the welfare of thousands of employees of the 500 indigenous contractors, who have been struggling to feed their families due to lack of funds.
“It is a great feat for a governor to pay 500 companies at this critical time and this is why we are asking other governors to emulate this gesture. Our greatest benefit is for us to get paid for work done and not to be defrauded by selfish people after we have executed massive projects with our own money,” he said.
Maitangaran also appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to carry local contractors along when executing projects, noting that this would develop their capacity and reduce poverty in the country
