Nigeria to invest in ship building and dockyard facility

Nairda Limited has been awarded a US$219.85m contract to construct ship building and dockyard facilities in Nigeria.The company will be responsible for the secondary buildings and electro-mechanical works and facilities for 36 months.

Mangrovetech Construction Engineering Nig. Ltd won the civil and infrastructure work contract. According to the Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), the project has a budget of US$316.85m.

Director General of NIMASA, Patrick Akpobolokemi, said the shipyard, will be developed in two phases, aiming to have a commercially viable world class building and repair facility.

Akpobolokemi also said: “the Shipyard and Dockyard will be managed by the private sector…” to “…transform the maritime sector into an industry that will generate capable manpower which will contribute significantly to the nation’s GDP.”

The ship building and dockyard facility project was commissioned by President Goodluck Jonathan on 10th May, 2014. The NIMASA Shipyard and Dockyard will be the permanent site of Nigeria’s Maritime University.
