R847bn infrastructure programme ‘to go ahead’

Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan reaffirmed the State’s commitment to national infrastructure development in his 2014 Budget, noting that R847-billion would be invested in infrastructure over the coming three years, reinforcing a shift in the composition of government’s expenditure envelope away from consumption expenditure, Engineering News reports.

 

The Minister told Parliament during his delivery of the yearly budget that, while government had made “good progress” in overcoming infrastructure backlogs – having spent over R1-trillion on infrastructure in the last five years – accelerated public infrastructure investment was critical to inclusive growth.
