Saint-Gobain Gyproc, has once again been recognised for their efforts to advance clean energy with Saint-Gobain’s Construction Products Gyproc Cape Town Factory this month being awarded with a prestigious Energy Management Insight Award.
One of only 32 businesses from 19 countries to qualify for this accolade, Saint-Gobain’s award is based on a comprehensive case study which was submitted detailing the implementation of their Global Energy Management System, and more specifically how they have effectively embraced an ISO 50001 energy saving system within the factory, which is based in Epping Industria in Goodwood.
The ISO 50001 standard is a product of international collaboration using best practices from over 50 countries and embeds into organisations a global benchmark for climate and clean energy action.
Changes implemented included the setting up of an energy management team, effective and sufficient training and awareness of staff as well as numerous physical changes within the factory’s drying plants.
The Saint-Gobain Construction Products Gyproc Cape Town Factory impressed the independent panel of international experts with their energy management leadership, the outcomes of which have already resulted in a significant return on investment with regards to energy reduction activities and a substantial reduction in carbon emissions.
With the ever increasing cost of energy, and it being the factory’s largest expense, the implementation of ISO 50001 not only ensures responsible energy usage but also improves business profitability. Most importantly these mechanisms help to conserve resources and tackle climate change.

This awards program is organised by the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) Energy Working Group (EMWG), in which government officials globally collaborate to create high-impact national programs to encourage and accelerate the use of energy management systems.
