South Africa housing budget gets a boost

20 August 2014

The Department of Human Settlement has released its budget and the MEC, Jacob Mamabolo, said US $0.42bn will be used for all housing programmes in the department, helping the many citizens seeking housing help.

Mamabolo also noted that the rapid urbanisation in Gauteng called for new homes which accommodated people of different races. The housing department was capable of bringing this into place through the use of land and houses.

Appropriate pieces of land will be bought so that the rent can be affordable. US $4.72m would be used for acquisition of land parcels.

Mixed income housing projects will help prevent discrimination as people with different incomes will be able to live as neighbours. All South Africans were invited to apply for government subsidies.

The housing department had already offered shelter to 53 Alexandra families who had been evicted and was building 91 emergency units for families displaced in Marlboro.

The budget was presented by Mamabolo to the Gauteng Legislature for adoption.
