Tanzania is proposing that government should step out of its agreement with other East African countries and re-introduce the 35% tax initially charged on cement importers in a bid to protect domestic producers.
EAC member states agreed recently that importers be charged 25%, 10% less than the initial customs duty.
Chairman on Industry and Trade, Luaga Mpina, said if the 35% levy is re-introduced, it will help check imported cement and boost local production and at the same time level the playing field for foreign and domestic companies.
Mpina said the government should do so to protect the local industry regardless of other East African countries’ decisions.
