Tongaat Mall collapse report expected in June

25 May 2015

The final report on what caused the Tongaat Mall to collapse, killing two people and injuring 29 in November 2013, is expected to be completed by the first week of June.

Labour department spokesperson Nhlanhla Khumalo said that although the report by the department’s occupational health and safety manager, Phumudzo Maphaha, would be completed then, it might not be made public.

“It still has to go to the minister and the director of public prosecutions,” he told News24. “If a decision is made to prosecute anyone, the report’s public release could be delayed pending any judicial proceedings.”

It has emerged that concrete in several places was below strength and the reinforcing steel from one beam was missing.

Durban businessman Jay Singh, whose company Gralio Precast (Pty) Ltd was responsible for building the mall, has blamed design engineer Andre Ballack for the collapse.
