The city of Tshwane is working towards construction of new houses and raising its power generation capacity to meet increasing demand.
The city has initiated a $0.78bn housing development programme to construct 122,000 homes in 12 months. Of these, 37,000 houses will be built by the South African Government, 45,000 by the City management, while private-sector investors will construct 40,000 houses. To fund the housing construction, the city plans to sell assets, including property and unused land.
The city, which has also been facing power shortages, plans to address the problem by reviving Rooiwal and Pretoria west coal-fired power stations.
According to the Mayor of Tshwane, Kgosientso Ramokgopa, the two power generation plants are currently operating at 15%. Proper management will be appointed for the two plants to ensure that surplus power is fed into the National electricity grid.
In addition, the council, which is seeking ways of reducing electricity demand and increase regional production, has approved construction of a new building worth $0.11bn for its meetings.
