Upcoming contractors in South Africa get training boost

22 April 2016

Upcoming contractors in South Africa have received a training boost after the Department of Transport and Public Works offered successful contractor development training programmes for a period of four weeks targeting upcoming contractors in the building industry.

The training took place in Riversdale and Worcester, and in Piketberg and Saldanha.
The course has a modular design to enable participants to continue to run their businesses in construction while they undertake their study. The course is mainly made to support the Department’s Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP).

Course components include building the construction business, enterprise development, managing the construction site and applying innovative site safety principles.

Ntombi Sibozo, an owner of a contractor business from Zwelethemba, says that the training made a huge impact. “I can now share the knowledge I’ve gained here with the people working with me. Some of the key topics I’ve learned about include drafting construction contract documents, leading and supervising construction teams, and tendering for construction contracts,” she said.

Beside this four-week training program, the Department is also offering another ten-month accredited training course for Level 2 Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) contractors.
