Kenya is undertaking infrastructure projects worth over US$1bn at its coastal town of Mombasa. The five projects include strengthening the Moi International Airport runway and renovation of the terminal building at a cost of US$ 851m. The projects are partly funded by the World Bank and the African Development Bank.
Upgrading of the airport road, including the construction of a dual carriageway section from the airport to the Changamwe roundabout will cost US$241m. The projects will ease traffic from the airport to the Changamwe roundabout. A 1.3-km link road is to be constructed from the Dolphine roundabout inside the airport.
According to the minister, the US$295.4-m second container terminal at the Mombasa port is 62% complete with operations at the terminal projected to start by February 2016. The new terminal will handle 1.2 million 20-feet equivalent units, bringing the total capacity of the port of Mombasa to an estimated 2.1 million 20-feet units.
