US$630m allocated to Joburg Water sewerage network

27 March 2015

US$630mn has been allocated by Johannesburg Water to replace sections of sewerage networks in Ivory Park Region A that are prone to blockages.

The region is facing immense pressure from increased population density. Residents have raised concerns about the frequency of blocking and spilling of sewage, posing an environmental and health hazard.

According to the Planning Manager of Johannesburg Water Networks Victor Chewe, the main objective of the project is to replace and upgrade 5.1 km of sewer network to improve delivery of service.

Chewe said the works began in the 2013- 2014 financial year and will see current sewer pipes being replaced with bigger pipes, increasing the system’s capacity and handle the effect of a growing population.
