Concrete.TV interviewed Jacques Smith, who is a registered professional Civil Engineer with extensive experience in concrete on site, in a readymix concrete environment, as well as a number of years of lecturing in concrete technology at the Cement and Concrete Institute.
Smith applauds the South African readymix professionals as some of the best in the world, noting that everywhere he goes around the world, you will find a South African working behind the scenes.
He believes the challenges the industry faces are that engineers should specify the correct concrete for projects, and that sometimes they are hasty to remove structures which could easily be fixed. Perhaps the issue lies not in consulting more, but in training more to get the guys involved in the process to understand the process a bit better.
Smith’s key message, he believes, to the readymix industry is to take the time to go and visit a lab where the work is being tested, because if they are doing it wrong, they are costing you money.
