Are we doing enough to avoid accidents on construction sites? Concrete.TV interviewed Professor Elsabe Kearsley from the University of Pretoria and Rudolf Murray, Regional Health & Safety Advisor from SAFCEC on the use of equipment on construction sites.
There is legislation in place, which has been there for many years, which need to meet stringent safety requirements – but Murray feels there is not enough check on the actual equipment before it is sold.
Prof Kearsley feels that engineers and construction workers are not trained sufficiently enough on using complicated equipment. She feels that equipment is getting more and more complicated with advancing technology, it is essential to ensure there is in-house training.
However, Murray states that research shows one of the leading causes of accidents is not the lack of training, but more the lack of competent supervision on site.
