The Advanced Cement Institute (ACTP) has recently developed a new type of cement that instantaneously and irreversibly absorbs and cleans hydrocarbons like new or used/spent motor oils, diesel & petrol fuels, kerosene, etc.
Lubricants include engine/motor and transmission oils, hydraulic, metal working, insulating and process fluids and greases. Used or spent motor oils contain various toxic substances (lead, zinc and arsenic, etc.), including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, which are known to cause cancer.
Spent engine oil is particularly toxic to plants and animals living in the water, and its film can impair natural processes, such as oxygen replenishment and photosynthesis. Spent engine oil can also pollute soils and drinking water. If used motor oil reaches sewage treatment plants, even small amounts as little as 50 ppm (parts per million) can foul the water treatment process. Agricultural soils become less productive when exposed to used engine/ motor oil, which builds up and persists in the environment for years.
Most of used motor/engine oil eventually makes its way into waterways in the form of runoff.
Although there is adequate campaign all over the world about the safe disposal of used engine oil, less than 45% of used-engine oil is being collected worldwide, while the remaining 55% is thrown by the end user in the environment.
It is reported that in the USA, the leader in Environmental protection, spent motor oil is the most commonly spilled type of oil. Americans spill 180 million litres of used oil per year. About 40% of the used engine oil is improperly or illegally disposed of, which ultimately goes to rivers and seas, polluting waterways, agriculture soils and underground water.
One litre of oil dumped into a river can contaminate 1 million litres of fresh water and have disastrous effects on our ecosystem.
In developing countries like South Africa and other African countries, there is no pollution data related to spent engine oil alone. However, it is expected that the above problem is much more serious than in the USA. Adequate, totally packaged and long-term solution is required. Hence, ACTP has developed the new cement product.
The new cement is to particularly assist oils and fuels manufacturers & users, automotives and locomotives workshops, energy, environmental management and services providers dispose of these pollutants once for all, in a more environmentally friendlier, safest manner.
The new cement chemisorbs (absorbs irreversibly) different types of oils and fuels. Once it has absorbed and cleaned up nicely fresh or spent engine oils for example (fig.1); the new type of cement is reused in concrete manufacturing to ensure 100% and irreversible containment of the pollutants.
In hardened concrete, the engine or motor oil chemisorbed by the new cement does not leach out to pollute waterways, soils and underground waters as opposed to currently used oil cleaning and absorbent products.
A number of scientific publications have proved that spent engine oils added to concrete do not leach out. Moreover, spent motor oils develop similar strengths as normal concrete and have other benefits as well:
• Reduce the water content and replace, partially or totally, expensive concrete plasticizers or superplasticizers admixtures
• Reduce the total porosity of concrete and its permeability to oxygen
• increase the concrete slump by 15%-30% if and where required
• Entrain about 25%-50% air and replace expensive air-entraining agents added to concrete for various reasons
• Produce light-weight or cellular concrete for light-weight constructions, heat and sound insulation of residential and commercial buildings, etc.
The advantages of the new cement product are: easy to use and cleaning agent at the same time, instant absorption of oils and fuels, safe to human life and environment, in powder form, inflammable, resists temperatures as high as 1200°C, no mud formed during cleaning, making it a product of first choice, can be stored for up to 12 months, cost-effective, etc.
In short, the new cement developed by ACTP offers the most reliable, safe and 100% recovery and irreversible containment of various oils, fuels and other hazardous organic products, provided it is further reused in concrete manufacturing. Specialized services collect and deliver used cement to local concrete manufacturers, which will make of it the greenest concrete.
Interested companies based in South Africa are: Oil & fuel manufactures (SASOL, SHELL, TOTAL, ENGIN, PETROSA, CHEVRON), heavy industry, mining companies, airports, military barracks, oils and fuels tankers, ports, railways companies (TRANSNET SPOORTNET, PRASA, GAUTRAIN), PUTCO, VAYA RAYA, ESKOM, DENEL, EUROPCAR, HERTZ, AVIS, BUDGET, IMPALA & other logistics companies, any big or small workshops for auto, airplanes and locomotives, petrol stations, energy and environmental management services, etc.
ACTP has already developed other products and long-term solutions to crucial environmental problems. Here are some examples:
• Method and kiln to reduce the cement manufacturing temperature from current 1450°C down to 1350°C without the addition of any fluxes or mineralisers,
• the neutralization of carcinogenic Chromium Six ions present in cement, concrete, Chromium slag and waste water with patented chemical admixtures
• gypsum-free cement for special metallurgical applications
• Specialized mortars and grouts for quick and long-lasting-repair of concrete structures, railways, potholes, water reservoirs, concrete pipelines, etc.
• methods and admixtures to reduce CO2 emission in the cement and concrete industry by producing cement with lower amounts of clinker
• new types of very high early strength shotcrete for mining and civil engineering applications, free of hazardous chemicals,
• various environmentally friendly cement and concrete admixtures
