The Civilution Congress 2016 event held recently at Gallagher raised a number of key issues facing engineers of all disciplines, one of them being the apparent shortage of engineers in South Africa. According to some of the audience present, there is no shortage of engineers as shown by the large number of engineering graduates who have no jobs. So, is the issue really that there is a need for development programmes whereby graduate engineers can be taken in, mentored and then placed into a position whereby the vision of Civilution can be fulfilled?
This was followed by a very comprehensive and informative session on #KnowledgeTransfer and #SkillingEngineers – chaired by Andre Hoffman, Immediate Past President of the South African Institution of Electrical Engineering and an esteemed panel of young engineers in the industry, Phuti Seopa, Jeshika Ramchund, Shilpi Jain and Danai Magugumela.
The Congress was a resounding success. Brought to fruition by a Civilution Advisory Panel consisting of the South African Institution of Civil Engineering, Consulting Engineers South Africa, South African Road Federation, The Concrete Society of Southern Africa, The South African Council for Project & Construction Management Professions, The South African Forum of Civil Engineering Contractors and The South African Institute of Electrical Engineers, amongst others.
The programme consisted of topics such as; Attracting viable and sustainable implementation of engineering and infrastructure delivery in South Africa, at which Nazir Alli, CEO of SANRAL was a keynote speaker and a very informative session on Infrastructure Procurement and Delivery Management which was delivered by the National Treasury.
The event was sponsored by GladAfrica Group (Pty) Ltd who was a Gold Sponsor. GladAfrica is a multidisciplinary built-environment consultancy whose services include; civil engineering, structural engineering, transport engineering, water and sanitation engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, project management, programme management, development management and facilities management.
JGAFrika (previously Jeffares & Green) was a Silver sponsor. Their services consist of providing civil and structural engineering and environmental consulting services throughout Africa.
