West Africa is building! We interview Bethwell Mnyamana who is currently at the Totally Concrete West Africa event in Lagos, Nigeria on what’s happening in the area and how important it is to do business there.
Spotlight on Nigeria: Lagos State, with its Eko Atlantic City development, is on track to transform itself into a megacity on the world map, providing space for 25 million people to live and work in the region by 2015. The Eko Atlantic City development will soon be the largest land reclamation site in the world, dredging approximately 140 million tonnes of sand by its completion and creating solid foundations extending over ten square kilometres. This will support a new urban development the size of the Manhattan district of New York City.
Spotlight on Cote d’Ivoire: Cote d’Ivoire is rapidly transforming itself into a leading emerging economy. In 2012, GDP growth stood at 9.8% compared to a negative rate of -4.7% in 2011 and now double-digit growth is expected in 2014 and 2015. Direct investment of US $2 billion for three major projects including a 3rd bridge in Abidjan, boosting production capacity for the Azito thermal power plant and construction of a new gas platform demonstrates international investor confidence in the nation’s economic climate.
Spotlight on Ghana: Construction projects are underway across all commercial and industrial sectors. Ciments de l’Afrique (CIMAF Ghana Limited) is investing US $60 million into the construction of a cement plant in Tema to establish a 1 million tonne per annum facility. The Airports Company of South Africa (ACSA) recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ghana Airports Company to offer consultancy on their upgrade and expansion programme including the construction of a new terminal at Accra’s Kotoka International Airport.
