Sarma: ‘Making readymix concrete the construction material of choice’

01 April 2015

SARMA is an acronym for the Southern African Readymix Association. This national body represents all the reputable ready-mix companies, and is also responsible for promoting the Ready-mix industry and establishing readymix as the preferred construction material.

In brief, SARMA’s purpose is to set standard and guidelines with regard to environmental, safety and quality issues. To be a member of SARMA these stringent policies must be met and adhered to. In addition, members are regularly audited against standards, which have been put in place.

Concrete.TV interviewed Johan van Wyk, General Manager of SARMA, where he gave an overview of the association and how it aims to unite all bodies within the readymix industry. In South Africa, their members are steadily increasing and their plants have grown to nearly 180 plants who are currently accredited members of SARMA.

SARMA assists plants with regards to health & safety, environmental concerns, road transport and of course quality. The association audits their members, and from 2015 will be doing two per year. The first is an official one, and the second is unannounced, which assures better quality.

Van Wyk tells us about the new “rip and tear” concrete cover for SARMA members which means that if the concrete does fail, they will break it down and reconstruct the whole structure.
