Opportunities abound in East Africa’s cement, concrete and construction industries! East Africa has in recent years seen exceptional growth in the construction sector, particularly around the development of new houses, multistory buildings, roads and bridges.
This trend has contributed to a surging demand for building materials in particular cement and concrete.
In parts of the region cement capacity, cannot keep up with the demand whilst in other parts there is an over-supply. Whilst the under-supply may provide opportunities for a number of local cement players to increase their capacity and geographic reach, a number of new players are prospecting the market to plug the deficit whilst imported cement is still being considered as viable by the industry. (At present, the region imports about 50% of its cement).
A myriad of opportunities and challenges awaits the region ranging from quality control issues, cost effective supply chain management and production to new technologies and techniques in the use of cement and concrete.
