Concrete.TV interviewed architect Rogan Rich on architect’s sustainable technology using a timbrel vaulting method
. Rich says that a key focus should be on using concrete within a built environment in a sustainable way and in doing so bring timbrel vaulting structural system back into Africa where it originated. The system was invented in North Africa and moved across to Spain where it was responsible for constructing many buildings in and around Europe.
These building systems are built from the soil of which it stands on and there would be no need to import any steel or glass. Timbrel vaulting provides a sustainable roof and floor cconstruction because it uses less building materials than any conventional techniques. The timbrel vaulting system makes use of good structural form to achieve a less significant shell thickness and involves no formwork.
This system normally uses three layers of thin brick. The tiling pattern is transformed in each layer to inhibit tile joints from being constant between the respective layers.
